I created highlights of the brightest and darkest material and slowly started blending it all together. As you can see, I blocked out the pond/rock layer so I could focus on the clothing. Once this was done, the smudge tool was used to give the water effect on the trees. I then used the Blur fiter to blur things up so none of the details were too sharp. I added highlights with the spray tool and and the dotted spray tool. After this was done, I added more of the general foliage shapes in and on top of the blended pond. Here I laid out the primary pond colors and slowly started blending them with the Spray tool until it was blended. The body was the top layer and the rock/pond was the 2nd layer behind the body. At this point, I also started layering things. After filling things in, I use the erase tool to shape the "blobs" into the correct outline shapes to help me with shading later. I also found that filling in the major areas can help with identifying if proportions or shapes looked correct. At time I would actually over darken some hues and then lighten them up to blend them in with out having to use the smudge tool.

I found that using darker skin tones to begin with and then using of the skin tone and gently adding them in worked best.

more to see if I could even do the painting and make it look half decent. This way you will always have your rough sketch outlined and won't have to worry about going back to cover up the lines or somehow blend them.

I usually create a rough sketch getting down the major parts of the drawing in place and use that as a "marker" so that I can paint or draw over it with a clear layer. The first thing I learned to do now when I start ArtStudio now is to create a new layer. I wanted to share the steps I took to create this drawing and some lessons learned from this experience! Hopefully some of these can help with using the tools and layers and save some time.
